Laptop Battery Storage/Maintenance

Published by milan on May 13th, 2011 - in Technical

With an ever increasing price of laptop battery prices and availability, the topic of battery maintenance is an important issue. During vacations we all forget about our laptop batteries and assume when we power it up again that all is well. If we fail to maintain our batteries the overall life of battery would decrease meaning that the next battery change will be due after fewer cycles as opposed to the standard cycle rating. Adaptive charging has been known to extend the battery life considerably.

Here are simple tips in order to extend the lifespans of your laptop batteries:

  • —Fully charge your laptop on it first charge.
  • —Newer batteries need to be fully charged and discharged a few cycle before reaching its 100%charge storing capacity.
  • —Do not leave the laptop plugged in all the time.
  • —Do not store batteries fully discharged as they tend to fall into a discharge state which leaves them incapable of storing charge in the future. Conversely storing them fully charged for extended period of them decreases the overall storage capacity.  It would be advised to store them at around 50% of its charge capacity.
  • —Optimize your laptops power management in order to decrease the overall strain on the battery. (i.e. Decrease screen brightness, Do not leave the laptop on idle with a HDD intensive programme for extended periods of time.)

Any other comments on this matter will be gladly welcomed.
